Arrivals of fresh rice crops in all the rice-producing countries

In 2022, global rice production is estimated to remain higher.

India's non-basmati rice exports for the year 2022 may see a lower export output in comparison to 2021 since all the major producing countries in the world including Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have witnessed a good crop yield in the ongoing season of 2021. As per B V Krishna Rao, president of Rice Exporters Association, most of these countries have seen an improvement in terms of economic activity and reduction of lockdowns, drought-like situations, and transportation bottlenecks. This is stated to allow overseas buyers of rice to explore more origins. He also added that in 2022, since the international production of rice is projected to remain higher, Indian rice exports may not stay firm like in 2021.

Rao also stated that, even in Vietnam, where crop season got delayed due to a new outbreak of COVID-19, planting has picked up as the country has succeeded to reduce the spread of the virus. Arrivals of the new rice crop in all the rice-producing countries have begun and this has affected the Indian rice export prices too. One rice exporter said that international sales for non-basmati rice for December 2021 delivery have dropped to around half a million MTS from one to one and a half a million MTS clocked in earlier months of 2021. Rao also stated that India’s non-basmati rice exports will reach 14 Mn MTS this 2021 calendar year, slightly higher than 2020 when Covid had constrained movement of containers.

According to reports of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), Thailand’s rice production is expected to bounce back in the 2021-22 marketing year after facing a 2-year drought, and USDA has projected 21 Mn MTS of rice production in 2021-22. Similarly, as per USDA, in Cambodia despite droughts and floods in various areas, rice production in the 2021-22 major wet season crop is projected to increase. Rice production is projected at 9.61 Mn MTS in 2021-22 marketing year, up from 9.48 Mn MTS in 2020-21. In India, according to the first evaluations released by the agriculture and farmers welfare ministry, the Kharif rice production is projected to achieve a record level of 107.04 MTS during 2021-22, which is a bit higher than last year’s figure of 104.41 MTS.
