The Department of Agriculture (DA) of the Philippines will not halt the issuing of rice import permits anytime soon, despite the nudging of rice farmer groups whose earnings are likely to be cut back further as the harvest season approaches. Agriculture Secretary William Dar stated that even prior to the rice tariff law came into effect, rice prices usually decrease in the second half of the year. Therefore, low rice grain prices cannot be attributed to the arrival of imported rice. Additionally, there has only been a slight increase in rice import volumes.
